Kumiko Lamp
Project Details / Background
The goal of this project was to make a cool kumiko style lamp using the resources at the UCSB Makerspace. I made a design in Solidworks using the tab and slot feature, and laser cut
the design out of eighth inch thick plywood. I bought a light base, bulb, and a power cord with a switch at my local hardware store, and put everything together at the UCSB Makerspace.

My design for the lamp shades was inspired by a mosaic I saw that looked like 3D cubes. Making the cubes look right was challenging but was also very rewarding.
I exported my part files as DXF files and got them to the laser cutter in the UCSB Makerspace.
I cut out and glued paper to the inside of the lamp shades to get the look of a traditional kumiko lamp.
After gluing the paper, I superglued the panels together.
I ended up making two lamps, one with a brown paper that had a red glow with the light, and one with white paper that had a more neutral tone with the light.
I also made the legs of the second lamp taller to make turning the light on easier.
This is the finished second lamp, when I have the chance I will definitely try to make an even cooler lamp!
